A year ago, I published my first blogpost (the English version was a bit later than the original Dutch version). I had found a nice comparison to illustrate the rather abstract concept ‘AI’, using an analogy that everybody knows. The expectation was that there would be more of these comparisons to be made, and that it could lead to a nice series of blogposts. Maybe even as much as ten!
Now it appears that the number of posts is approaching 20. It’s no surprise that AI has many different aspects, but I did not expect that you could find a relevant analogy for all those perspectives. What’s more: the list of ideas for new topics has only become longer in the meantime.
What does that mean? As far as I’m concerned, AI is a big revolution in information technology, like script, the printing press and the internet. AI will influence our way of working and living just as much as these other revolutions, maybe even more. But AI is not magic: it’s ‘just’ technology that apparently can be compared to other technologies.
Which is logical, in a way: new technology is different every time, but humans stay the same and our reactions follow similar patterns. In other words, we can learn from earlier reactions to new technology.
I have categorized all analogies that I found so far. I’m not sure what it means that the largest group of analogies is centered around cars… so for the next year of blogging, I will explore other directions.
